Often, when discussing horse welfare io metterei wellness, the focus shifts to nutrition, training, or medical care. Yet, a crucial and frequently overlooked topic is stable bedding. Dr. Elisabetta Bacaro emphasizes that this is not just about hygiene, but a vital component for the horse’s daily health.
Straw or wood shavings: which is the right choice?
Various types of bedding are available on the market, each offering specific qualities to evaluate based on the needs of both horse and barn. The two most common options are straw and wood shavings.
- Straw: It is an excellent choice, particularly during winter. Thermal imaging conducted by Dr. Bacaro reveals that the horse’s lower limbs—from the knee down—tend to stay extremely cold. This thermal stress can negatively affect the joints. Straw keeps the limbs significantly warmer compared to other bedding materials.
Wood Shavings: This material offers distinct benefits. It is not ingested by the horse and provides superior urine absorbency. It is also easier to manage than straw, although it offers lower thermal insulation.
There is no single perfect choice for every situation, but carefully weighing the properties of each material is essential.
The golden rule: bedding must be CLEAN and THICK!
Regardless of the material chosen, too often stalls feature thin, dirty bedding with a minimal quantity of straw or shavings.
This is completely inadequate.
Bedding must be CLEAN AND DEEP!
Rubber matting alone is not enough. Horses require a thick, cushioned layer to lie down and rest properly without putting undue stress on their joints or risking bed sores.
How to assess your horse's bedding
To assess whether your horse’s bedding is suitable, Dr. Bacaro suggests asking yourself one simple question: “Would I lie down here for half an hour?”
If the answer is no, immediate action is required. Thoroughly clean the stall and add enough bedding to create a thick, plush layer. A vital piece of advice: periodically remove all bedding, thoroughly scrub the stall floor, and allow it to dry completely. A horse’s health relies heavily on these small yet crucial daily details.
