Why do horses wear fly veils?
We often meet people when we are out hacking who ask why do we put these “strange” hats on our horses!
The quick answer is that fly veils help to protect our horses’ ears from flies and midges.
Even though midges don’t have a nasty bite or sting, they can still be extremely annoying as they get into the horses’ ears and cause intense skin irritation, pain, itching and discomfort. This can make horses repeatedly shake their heads to get away from them and become worried and distressed.
Midges can also cause lasting wounds and sometimes the horses’ ears can become more sensitive which means your horse will be reluctant to let you touch them.
Even getting a headcollar or bridle on the horse can become a tricky task.
Finally, some flies and insects bite or sting the horses’ ears which can be a risk to a horse’s health because they can spread diseases or infections.
Fly Veils: More Than Just Insect Protection
However, the purpose of fly veils goes beyond protecting horses from insects.
They also reduce discomfort caused by wind and help block out unwanted noise.
For instance, horses can wear soundless fly veils at competitions and shows to muffle sound, reducing the stress and anxiety that loud crowds and unfamiliar noises can trigger.
At LoveHorses, we believe that handcrafted fly veils made from premium-quality materials offer essential ear protection—making all the difference between a calm, cooperative horse and a nervous, hard-to-handle one.
LoveHorses Craftsmanship
LoveHorses fly veils are not industrially manufactured products, but genuine handcrafted creations.
Each fly veil is entirely handmade using a crochet technique, with perfect stitches and carefully finished details.
More than 4 hours of work are required to create a single fly veil.
They are the result of the passion of people who have chosen to embrace the LoveHorses philosophy, putting love for horses and quality before profit.
Behind every product lies a story of craftsmanship, passion, personalisation and quality. A philosophy that has guided us since day one.
Style & Customisation
Beyond their practical function, fly veils also have an aesthetic value: they complete the horse’s outfit and can be coordinated with the saddle pad and horse rug.
With three different models and a variety of customisation options, every horse can have a unique look that combines functionality and elegance.
